Child, Exaggerate

Did you ever, when you were a kid, toss a ball or a doll or a raggedy bear into the air and catch it and step twice and tumble to your knees? I caught many a projectile, many a toy, many a pinecone, many a cat, and every time I caught it on my feet, I dove, I crumbled, I tumbled in the grass, on the kitchen floor, on the deck, off the deck, off the carport roof, so that I'd return safe to earth; I caught it on my feet then stained my knees. Why? Why, I watched a 5 year old, a Caddie Woodlawn, catch her lady-bug purse, run twice, skid to a stop on her knees. Why'd she fall to her knees? Why'd I?

Why don't I anymore?

  1. I think that you have realized that it doesn't matter all that much whether or not anyone sees how you caught it anymore. You know that people don't care because you are "an adult now, Galen."
I remember when I realized this. I was about 16 and I accidentally slammed my hand in the sliding door at my house. I was about to cry or sream out in pain, and then I realized that there was no one listening. No one could fix it, no one really cared. That was the day that I began my journey into adulthood. I stopped thinking like a child, and all of a sudden I was this jaded, cynical girl, almost without warning. I had figured out one of life's hardest lessons: No one really cares.

  2. As I told you, I already tried commenting yesterday but ended in frustration.

I'm swimming in "right" answers, and have decided not to try anymore. O, special people who so easily rise above pools of the cliche', the accepted, and the stereotypical. We need you every bit as those who say "simple" and smile at life.

    Thank you, indeed.

  3. I'd like to thank jj for her comment that makes me want to crawl under my covers and never wake up ever again.

A friend and I considered some time ago why it is that we don't jump in puddles anymore. Are our clothes that important? Is being dry, warm, and comfortable worth not having any fun?

I'm not sure why we don't fall to our knees any more, but I'm pretty sure the answer will be found somewhere near puddles.
